United’s MileagePlus Extends PlusPoints Through 2023

As a courtesy to their loyalty members, United Airlines recently shared plans to extend the expiration date for all PlusPoints an additional 6-12 months. Depending on when your points were originally due to expire, you could have a new expiration date as late as January 31st, 2022. With that, the airline hopes members will have plenty of opportunities to continue enjoying any accumulated PlusPoints for another year.

United Airlines first introduced PlusPoints back in 2019 as a new method for loyalty members to access Premier upgrades on flights. Essentially, PlusPoints are Regional Premier Upgrades and Global Premier Upgrades rebranded into a flexible and convenient upgrade system. Upgrades with PlusPoints can be easily requested on united.com or through their mobile app.

In addition to the PlusPoints extension, United Airlines has also extended offered a status extension to certain elite members. Not every elite member has received news of the extension, and at this time it’s unclear if they will or if this perk is only being reserved for some members.

Here’s what we do know:

  • Anyone that already re-qualified for status in 2021 (for 2022) by flying now has all their PlusPoints expiring on January 31, 2023
  • Anyone that has not re-qualified for status by flying now has all of their PlusPoints expiring on July 31, 2023.
  • MileagePlus Platinum and 1K members that have received a complimentary status extension rather than earned it have not (yet) received a new extension for PlusPoints.
