United MileagePlus Offers Premier Status Match

Written by Ashley Ferraro

If you have status with another airline’s loyalty program, United’s MileagePlus program is willing to match that status through the end of the year. As a part of their Premier Status Match Challenge promotion, United is offering top-tier flyers of competing airlines a comparable status with MileagePlus. Pointsters, instead of having to work your way up through a new program, this is your opportunity to try out elite status with MileagePlus.

If you already have status with an airline, you know how much flying and spending it took to get there. United is giving you the opportunity to skip the hard work! That’s right, they know you’ll love their program that much if you try it.

How Does The Premier Status Match Challenge Work?

As long as you meet the criteria to participate in the offer, your account will be upgraded for 90 days. You’ll either be given Premier Silver, Premier Gold or Premier Platinum status, based on the status you have within your current frequent flyer program. For example, both Delta Air Lines Medallion and American Airlines AAdvantage elite status have three levels that can be matched in MileagePlus.

If you’d like to keep the matched Premier status for the remained of the year, you’ll need to stay active with United. Members can do so by earning a certain number of Premier qualifying miles (PQM) or Premier qualifying segments (PQS) on flights operated by United or United Express within a 90-day period. The amount of PQM or PQS you must earn is dependent upon the Premier status level you’re matched to. The table below breaks the requirements down for you.

So, if you like the United MileagePlus program enough to stick with it, you’ll still have to put forth some miles and money. However, there’s no risk in trying it out. For 90 days, you can enjoy the perks of having elite status with MileagePlus. After that period, you can decide whether you’d like to keep up with the program, or let it go and return to your original loyalty program.

How Can You Get Started?

To determine if you’re a candidate for Premier status through this promotion, you’ll simply need to complete and submit a form online. You’ll be required to provide some information and documents to verify you’re elite status with a competing frequent flyer program.

There are some exclusions, however. Customers who have Star Alliance Silver or Gold status are unable to participate on the offer. In addition, it’s not valid for those who have participated in the MileagePlus status match program within the last 5 years.

It’s not often you’ll find an airline loyalty program making an offer like this. Even if you’re satisfied with your current frequent flyer program, it doesn’t hurt to explore a bit, especially at no cost. For more details on the MileagePlus program, visit United’s website.
