Now through November 13, 2018 you can buy Southwest points in increments of 1,000 points, starting at a minimum purchase of 2,000 points. If you are thinking of purchasing the points the breakdown is as follows:
-2,000 points for $60 (no discount)
-3,000 points for $90 ( no discount)
-5000 points for $96.25
-10,000 points for $192.50
-20,000 points for $385
To calculate the cost per point with the discount simply divide the amount paid by the amount of points:
Example: 5000 points at a cost of 96.25 divide 96.25 by 5000 which gives you 1.925 cents a point. I only recommend buying points for under a penny and only using points in lieu of cash when the value is substantially more than a penny.
Example: A flight can cost $500. I can pay $500 in cash or 25,000 points.
Dividing $500 by 25,000 comes out to a point value of 2 cents so pay with points on this example. If they wanted 60,000 points then pay with cash since you would be getting less than a penny a point credit.
I generally don’t recommend you purchase Southwest Points unless you don’t enough points to to get the desired Southwest flight.
