6 Ways to Stay Healthy During The COVID-19 Pandemic

The media is tirelessly warning us to prepare for the current COVID-19 pandemic. Some have gone to lengths such as stocking up on food and household essentials. Others have taken it upon themselves to quarantine their families, only going out for absolute necessities. Not to mention, airlines have been doing an excellent job at accommodating and comforting their loyal customers. and At this point, the status of many things are changing by the hour.

All of this information has caused panic to Americans, who are unsure what to expect when they wake up each morning. However, now more than ever, it’s important to remain calm in order to keep ourselves and our loved ones safe. One thing we’ve learned is that social distancing is really the only way to stay safe during this time. However, it is still important to focus on your health while you’re stuck at home. One of those things is ensuring that our immune systems are functioning properly.

Functional means that it’s healthy and doing its job. So, while you’re stuck in your house with a full fridge and pantry, be careful about what foods and drinks you go for. Although none of this tips will prevent, treat, or cure COVID-19, they may be beneficial to your overall health. From personal experience as well as recommendations from health professionals, we’ve rounded up some things to consider when it comes to keeping a functional immune system.

Vitamin C

According to Dr. Roizen, keeping up with your vitamin C intake is critical. The best source of vitamin C is fresh fruits and vegetables. However, adding a supplement (not a substitution!) to your diet can assist in immune function. American Health’s Ester-C 500 mg is highly rated and a personal favorite supplement. I take two a day, as recommended by the label.

Vitamin D

Dr. Oz suggests taking a vitamin D supplement. Although we usually get vitamin D naturally from the sun, it’s harder to get during this time of the year, especially up north. He states, “Supplements have never been shown to beat coronavirus, however there are some tactics that will slow down the progression of viruses in general.” So, it can’t hurt to put yourself and your family on a vitamin D regimen. NatureWise offers a high potency 5,000 IU formula of vitamin D-3.

Elderberry

According to Russel Greenfield, MD, elderberry extract can be effective at fighting symptoms of sickness. It has recently gained traction as flu remedy, in addition to its antiviral and anti-inflammatory effects. “In at least one study, elderberry extract compared favorably to Tamiflu,” claimed Greenfield.

Elderberry is popular in supporting proper bodily functions. These Elderberry Gummies from Havasu Nutrition claim to support immune and health function.

Zinc

According to an article on Healthline.com, “Zinc is needed for immune cell development and communication and plays an important role in inflammatory response.” The article summarizes claims about the mineral, “Supplementing with zinc may help protect against respiratory tract infections and reduce the duration of these infections.”

Zinc may be something to consider to add to your supplement regimen. Try this ionic liquid zinc concentrate from Good State. This product claims that the liquid makes for better absorbency than pills. Plus, the droplets can be conveniently added to water or juice. Consider zinc balance from Jarrow Formulas if you prefer capsules. Or, try a magnesium supplement that contains zinc and D3. Magnesium and zinc specifically supplemented together assist in the function of immune cells.

Sleep Well

We don’t need a doctor to remind us of the importance of sleep on our bodily functions. It’s an age old truth that a reduced amount of sleep can lead to a weakened immune system. Eric J. Olson, M.D. from Mayo Clinic comments, “Studies show that people who don’t get quality sleep or enough sleep are more likely to get sick after being exposed to a virus, such as a common cold virus. Lack of sleep can also affect how fast you recover if you do get sick.”

Even if you’re exposed to a virus or infection, your immune system has the power to keep it from invading your body. Although sleep sounds simple to some, others have trouble getting a good night’s rest. In terms of immune support, Olson suggests, “The optimal amount of sleep for most adults is seven to eight hours of good sleep each night.”

Manage Stress

Just like a lack of sleep, we’ve all heard that increased stress levels can compromise our immune system. As far as supplements go, Ashwagandha has been found to reduce stress levels, and GABA is known for decreasing stress and anxiety.

Creating a relaxing and calming environment in your home (especially since you’ll be stuck there) can also help promote healthy stress levels. Personally, I use this diffuser from Amazon to make my home comforting and calming. This larger diffuser is also popular. Since it holds more water, there’s no need to refill it as often.

Diffuse an essential oil like lavender in order to relieve stress, I use something like this one. I’d also recommend a variety blend specially formulated for stress relief, as it helps to diversify the scent in the air.
